Putin: Russia must keep up with blockchain technology!
At a meeting with Herman Gref, the president of the largest bank in Russia, Sberbank, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that it was important not to be left behind in blockchain development.
Sberbank has already introduced Blockchain in its document transfer and storage systems. In December of last year it became a partner of the Russian Antimonopoly Service (FAS). The bank reported its plan to open a cryptocurrency exchange in Switzerland soon.
Putin, without specifically mentioning Blockchain, raised the question of why Russia needs this industry. He said: “we have everything […] oil, gas, coal, all kinds of metals […] gold, platinum, diamonds, everything!” Then he says that the industry in Russia is developing well and has a “good intellectual basis”.
Putin also adds that Russia needs its own “push” and cites an analogy made by a former oil minister of an unnamed Arab country:
“The Stone Age did not end because of a lack of stones, but because new technologies came up.”
In Putin’s view, countries that start too late to introduce this new technology, which he never mentions by name, will “very quickly fall into the dependence of the leaders of said development”. That is something that “Russia cannot allow under any circumstances:”
